The Out-Spoken Malawi’s Minister of Information Patricia Kaliati has branded Thursday’s anti-fee hike demonstration by the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) politically motivated.
CSOs organized Nation Wide demonstrations to force President Peter Mutharika to intervene on public Universities fee Hike.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 5, 2016, Kaliati said that organizers of the demonstrations wanted to use University fees as an excuse to pursue a desperate
agenda of mobilizing a national political revolt.
“This has not worked. The movement has collapsed because Malawians are reasonable. Listening to the sentiments of
the organizers, their issues are scattered and they do not make sense. These are political machinations that wanted to
chance a ride on the back of innocent University students,” said Kaliati in a statement.
The statement further reads,”We also wish to thank Malawians for showing organizers of the demonstrations that they missed the point. The numbers were miserable because Malawians understand that any concerns
need to be resolved by dialogue, and not politicizing everything by going to the streets.”
Meanwhile, Mutharika and students of Public Universities agreed to have fees for generic
students reduced from MK400,000 to MK350,000 while fees for mature students of College Medicine is now pegged at MK1 Million; Kamuzu College of Nursing
At Polytechnic and Chancellor
College they will be paying MK600, 000.
