Malawi’s Sports and Culture Minister, Grace Chiumia has apologized to Malawians and
President Peter Mutharika for remarks she made at Mulhako Wa Lhomwe fundraising dinner in Lilongwe.
The youthful Minister in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime, Chiumia popularly known as “Obama” during the
fundraising dinner addressed president Mutharika as a “Life President” development which angered Malawians.
In an interview with a local press Chiumia said, “l would like to apologise to president Mutharika. Let people castigate me and not the president. He is innocent person. It was a mistake which everybody can make. Malawians should not take this seriously,”
Chiumia added that it was a slip of a tongue which she did not realize until a friend from the opposition later told her about it.
National Secretary for Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace, Martin Chiphwanya, accused Chiumia of trying to take Malawi
back to one-party rule and that her remarks threatened Malawi’s nascent democracy.
