The First Grade Magistrate court in Dedza has sentenced Lazarro Maxwell, 19 to 8 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for defiling a 14 years old girl in the
district.

The convict and his friend were in Gule wamkulu regalia when they met the
victim (name withheld) at a certain bush which
separates Bowazulu and Kalipande villages.

When the complainant passed the gule
wamkulu (convict), started chasing her and
was caught, pushed down and the Gule wamkulu had carnal knowledge of her.

After this ordeal, the victim reported it to her
parents who later reported it at Chafumbwa
Police Station.

The suspect was arrested
and later charged with the offence of Defilement
to which he pleaded guilty.

The prosecutor who presented the case
Inspector Wedson Nyondo before Magistrate Enett Banda begged the
court to give a stiffer punishment to the convict
for tarnishing the image of the Chewa culture with it’s Gule wamkulu dance.

Maxwell comes from Chatondedza Villlage
while the victim comes from Kalipande in the area of Traditional Authority Chilikumwendo in the district respectively.
