Malawi President Professor Peter Mutharika has sent his congratulations to Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who has been re-elected as
president Of Zambia in the just ended controversial elections.
President Lungu saw off a hard-off
challenge from opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party For Nation Development (UPND).
The Incumbent president Lungu, who is also a leader of the Patriotic Front (PF) won 50.35% of Thursday’s vote against 47.67%
of Hillema his main political opponent.
In his congratulatory message President Mutharika said, “Let me take this opportunity to congratulate sitting President
of the Republic of Zambia Edgar Chagwa Lungu for being declared winner in the just ended elections,”
President Mutharika also called upon the people of Zambia to maintain peace and order throughout the post-election period. He said that the people of Malawi are proud to have peace loving and God fearing neighbors like Zambians.
“To the people of Zambia I say; well done for a peaceful election process. Whether your candidate has won or not, may you place
the aspirations of your nation ahead of everything,” said Mutharika.
Meanwhile, the opposition UPND has already begun the process of appealing the results, party lawyer Jack Mwiimbu told reporters after results announcement on Monday.
