In a separate development, the Police at Chinsapo Township in Lilongwe on Friday rescued a 20-year-old man from angry mob
that nearly set him alight.
The man, identified as Chimwemwe Steven, was accused of stealing four shovels from some residents who were mining sand at Lilongwe river.
According to Detective Sub Inspector Charles Mwandira, the suspect sneaked to the river and stole the materials after the miners were relaxing elsewhere.
He, however, was apprehended shortly after making off, inciting the irate mob into justice.
They dragged him up to the Chinsapo 1 bus stage and heaped some dry grass and plastic bags on him.
Police, however, rushed to the scene after being tipped by well-wishers.
A single shot into the air scared and dispersed the mob that also expressed anger at the police action.
