Malawi’s first Cashgate convict and a former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Treaser Namathanga Senzani died on Monday morning at Mwaiwanthu Private Hospital in the commercial city of Blantyre.
Senzani’s death comes barely three months after she was set free after serving half of her three year jail term following conviction over stealing of public funds.
Late Senzani was on October 6, 2014 sentenced to three years jail term on offences of money laundering and theft linked to the Cashgate scandal. She was supposed to finish her sentence on October 6, 2017.
“Cashgate” is a financial scandal involving looting, theft and corruption that happened at Capitol Hill the seat of Government of Malawi.
The scandal prompted foreign donors – who provide around 40 percent of Malawi’s budget – to pull the plug on aid of around $150 million (118 million euros).
