Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has ordered the office of the Accountant General to pay all civil servants by December 20 2016.
The Malawi leader has also granted days of leave for civil servants to enable them to celebrate the Christmas and New Year’s festivities with the families.
“It has pleased His Excellency President Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi and Minister Responsible for the Public Service to grant the days between 22nd December 2016 3rd January 2017 as public holidays for civil servants,” a statement, signed by Chief Secretary to Government George Mkondiwa, reads in part.
However, public officers whose institutions and departments provide essential services such as hospitals, police, and immigration and road safety services will remain at work.
“These categories of offices shall be allowed to take their holidays in due to course of the year (2017) in order to avoid disrupting essential services during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
“Controlling officers for such institutions are advised to put in place proper arrangements for staff providing essential services to proceed on holidays at an appropriate and convenient time.”
