People of Chalonda village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsabwe in Thyolo had a shock of their lives on Tuesday following the brutal murder of a 19 year old boy with albinism, Madalitso Pensulo, Malawi News Agency reported.
According to Mana, the deceased is believed to have allegedly been murdered by one of the villagers, Willard Mikaeli, 28 who is currently on the run.
The police in the district have so far confirmed the development but could not divulge more information on the matter.
However, one of the villagers, Norman Matekenya, told the Malawi News Agency in an interview that the shocking incident happened on Tuesday when the accused person approached and asked the deceased to escort him to a nearby market to buy some doughnuts so that they could have a cup of tea together.
”After buying the doughnuts, the two went straight to Mikaeli’s house where instead of preparing the tea he decided to kill the deceased,” he said.
Matekenya added that while in the house, Mikaeli strangled the deceased and hit him to death using a sharp weapon.
”It was at this time that the deceased was heard shouting for help a situation that prompted some villagers to rush to the house to check what was happening,” he added.
Matekenya explained that when the villagers arrived at the house they found Pensulo already dead and the accused was nowhere to be found.
According to reports, people in the area have since demolished five houses that belonged to the relatives of the accused as one way of expressing their anger at what has happened.
District Commissioner, Charles Thombozi has since asked the police in the district to conduct a thorough investigation and search so that the accused is brought to book.
”I received a brief report from the police on the incident. As a district, we cannot condone this. People with albinism need to be protected. They have a right to life as anyone else. Therefore I am urging the police to do their job professionally in this case, ” the DC said.
The deceased hailed from Mulonda village, T/A Nsabwe in the district while Mikaeli comes from Sandama.-MANA
