March 11, 2017 by Staff Reporter

Malawi’s First Lady Madam Dr. Gertrude Mutharika has urged women in the country to desist from oppressing others and enriching themselves, saying such tendencies retard development and are against the will of God.

The First Lady was speaking Friday during the commemoration of Women’s World Day of Prayer in Karonga.

She said the tendency of oppressing one another by some women cannot assist Malawi to develop unless they stop thinking about themselves only and start giving equal opportunities to one another.

Let Us Love One Another

“Most of the women in Malawi are busy oppressing their friends not to develop spiritually and physically. Instead of being inspired by those who have achieved in life, most of the women in the country demonstrate a sense of jealous.” Mutharika noted

She said, However as humans, we should consider salvation as the best achievement in life that we should strive for, and we should make sure that we are leading towards that.”

Mutharika said the prayers should help them to refrain from bad behaviour and start providing equal opportunities to each other.

“Let us love one another and pray for our country for us to continue living peacefully,” she advised.

The First Lady read the book of Isaiah, Chapter 51, verse 1 which said, ‘Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the lord: look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug’.

Madam Mutharika donated K300, 000 to support vulnerable people in Chitipa through this year’s Women’s World- Day- of- Prayer grouping.

Before she attended the prayers, the First Lady toured Karonga Museum, one of the destinations in the country that are rich with the history of Malawi.

Speaking earlier, National Chairperson for Women’s World Day of Prayer, Regina Phanga, hailed the country’s First Lady for making it to grace the occasion in the district of Karonga.

This year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer was held under the theme ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong’. ( story by Malawi News Agency)
