Street Kids Irks Blantyre Flea Market Vendors

March 25, 2017 by Staff Reporter

Vendors in Blantyre Flea Market have expressed concern over street children attacking customers who pass through the market.

Speaking with Malawi News Agency (MANA) Thursday in Blantyre, Deputy Chairperson for the market, Robert Nazombe said the street children mostly attack those people who pass through the market around 7 pm and also during early morning hours around 5 and 6 am.

He explained that customers are robbed of their money, cell phones and other valuables saying they manage to do this because they attack in large numbers.

“The situation is affecting us because customers are afraid to pass through the market since they are afraid of being attacked and they are the same people who buy our products,” the chairperson said.

Nazombe said when such incidents occur; people always assume that it is the vendors doing business in the market which tarnishes their image.

He said in the past they used to attack those doing business in the market but the malpractice stopped after several efforts were taken to rectify the problem.

Nazombe said when the street children are caught; they are taken to the police where they are sent to rehabilitation centres.

However, people are always surprised to see the street children back in the street after being taken to court.

Nazombe said it could have been good if the authorities could have put strict measures to remove the children from the streets or give them something to do.-MANA
